Scream is a masterpiece of horror. It is not only scary, but also smart, funny, and meta. It plays with the conventions and clichés of the genre, while also delivering genuine scares and twists. It is a movie that knows what it is, and has fun with it.

The movie follows a group of teenagers who are terrorized by a masked killer who calls them on the phone and asks them trivia questions about horror movies. If they answer wrong, they die. The killer also seems to know a lot about their personal lives, and has a motive that is connected to a dark secret from their past.

The movie is full of references and homages to other horror classics, such as Halloween, Psycho, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and more. It also breaks the fourth wall and comments on the rules and tropes of horror movies, such as “don’t say ‘I’ll be right back’” and “the killer is always someone you know”. The movie is self-aware, but not in a way that diminishes its impact or quality.

The movie also has a great cast of characters, who are likable, relatable, and memorable. The main protagonist is Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a strong and smart heroine who has to face her own trauma and fight for her survival. She is supported by her friends Tatum (Rose McGowan), Randy (Jamie Kennedy), and Stu (Matthew Lillard), who each have their own personality and charm. The movie also features two iconic characters: Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), a ruthless reporter who is determined to get the scoop on the murders, and Dewey Riley (David Arquette), a bumbling but brave deputy who tries to protect Sidney.

The movie also has one of the best reveals of the killer’s identity and motive in horror history. I won’t spoil it here, but let’s just say that it is shocking, clever, and satisfying. Not to mention that it’s given us some of the most memorable scenes and lines in horror history, such as the opening scene with Drew Barrymore, the garage door scene with Rose McGowan, and the final showdown at Stu’s house.

Scream is a movie that has everything: horror, comedy, mystery, drama, action, and romance. It is a movie that respects and celebrates the genre, while also reinventing it.
